A grid inverter's only function is to optimize the output from the connected solar panels and to invert that DC power to AC power for direct use by the connected loads.
The grid inverter does not have a connection for batteries, and on it's own cannot- and does not offer any backup, regardless of the quantity of connected solar panels. It's typical application is in a pure grid-tied system to render savings, but no backup.When the utility grid power (Eskom) fails, the inverter must (and will) shut down.
The grid-inverter can be used as part of a constructed hybrid system where it will be AC-Coupled with a Battery Inverter/Charger to form a Constructed Hybrid System, offering backup and energy harvesting from the sun.
